180 Students to Compete in 2025 National Swimming Championships in Lagos

No fewer than 180 students are anticipated to compete in the 2025 National Swimming Championships, organized by the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF).
Funsho Usman, Secretary-General of the NSSF, announced on Monday that 30 students from each of the six geo-political zones of Nigeria are expected to take part in the event. The championships are scheduled to commence on Tuesday at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
“We have so far registered 57 students this morning,” Usman stated.
He noted that the two-day championship will feature students from both public and private schools nationwide.
“This year’s tournament is a collaborative effort between Dynaspro Sports Promotion, known for organizing premier private inter-school swimming contests, and the Nigeria Aquatic Federation,” Usman explained.
He emphasized that the initiative is aimed at discovering and developing young swimming talents who could potentially represent Nigeria in international competitions.
Usman highlighted that increasing enthusiasm among students led to the inclusion of private schools in the tournament. Several standout athletes from the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Ogun State will also be participating.
“We witnessed exceptional performances at the last National Sports Festival, where students secured medals for their respective states. To ensure we identify the top talents, we’ve broadened participation to include private schools,” he said.
“With the technical support from the Nigeria Aquatic Federation and the vibrant involvement of Dynaspro, we’re expecting record-breaking performances and the rise of new swimming stars,” Usman added.
He concluded by stating that all participating teams had until Monday, June 23, to complete their registration, with the event beginning Tuesday morning and the finals set for Wednesday.
