Nigeria has been overshadowed by universities from Egypt and South Africa in the latest QS World University rankings, released this June.
South Africa’s institutions topped Africa, with 11 making the list and notable recognition in research output, faculty citations, and graduate employability.
Egypt followed closely, with Cairo University and Ain Shams securing strong global rankings .
By contrast, only three Nigerian universities made the cut, securing eight subject-specific placements significantly fewer than Egypt and South Africa.
The rankings reflect longstanding disparities in funding, research infrastructure, international linkages, and academic resources.
Experts warn that without strategic investment and policy reform, Nigeria risks losing academic talent and international competitiveness.
