The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has extended the enforcement deadline for the tinted glass permit requirement to August 12, 2025, following public outcry over the reactivation of the digital permit application system.
This was disclosed in a statement on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who noted that the extension is in line with the police’s goal of promoting transparent and citizen-focused policing.
The grace period extension follows the resumption of tinted glass permit issuance on April 30, 2025, through an upgraded digital platform, POSSAP (www.possap.gov.ng), which integrates identity verification using applicants’ National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN).
“This decision reflects our responsiveness to the public’s feedback and our commitment to ensure that no citizen is unduly disadvantaged during the permit acquisition process,” the statement read.
The police emphasized that efforts are underway to further streamline both physical and contactless application methods, incorporating enhanced verification, faster turnaround, and reduced bureaucracy.
Report Unlawful Practices
Members of the public were urged to report cases of extortion or hidden charges during the application or biometric capture process via the official hotline: 09169967000.
The Force reiterated that possap.gov.ng remains the only authorized platform for new applications and renewals. It also reaffirmed its stance against unauthorized payments and fraudulent agents.
Reform Background
The tinted permit ban was originally imposed in June 2022 to curb criminal activities. However, the policy was revisited in early 2024, with the Police Force introducing a revamped digital permit system that includes:
- QR codes
- Digital holograms
- Unique serial numbers
- Biometric verification
- Background checks
All procedures comply with the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 1991.
