Barcelona’s Unbeaten Run Ends as Villarreal Clinch Champions League Spot with 3-2 Win

Barcelona’s unbeaten LaLiga run came to an end after a thrilling 3-2 home defeat to Villarreal, who secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League with the vital three points.

Despite the loss, the atmosphere at Estadio Lluis Companys remained celebratory, with the LaLiga title already wrapped up. This match could mark Barça’s final home fixture at the temporary venue before their return to the renovated Camp Nou.

Villarreal struck early, stunning the crowd just three minutes in. A blistering counter-attack ended with Ayoze Pérez calmly finishing off a cross-field pass from Nicolas Pépé, slotting a low shot inside the post to open the scoring.

The goal slightly dampened the party mood, but it served as motivation for the hosts. Fermín López came close to levelling almost immediately, and was denied again by a superb point-blank save from Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Júnior within the opening 10 minutes.

Barcelona then took control of possession, pressing high and pushing Villarreal into their own half, while the visitors looked dangerous on the break. Robert Lewandowski’s powerful header was somehow kept out, while at the other end, Nicolas Pépé wasted a promising opportunity after overcomplicating a breakaway.

Though Villarreal managed to contain young sensation Lamine Yamal for much of the first half, the 17-year-old eventually found space and scored a fine equaliser in the 38th minute – his ninth goal in LaLiga this season.

Moments later, Yamal dazzled again with an outrageous piece of skill that nearly led to another goal. The pressure finally paid off in first-half stoppage time when Fermín López rifled a low shot into the net, putting Barça ahead 2-1 at the break.

However, Villarreal came out strong in the second half and quickly pulled level. Just five minutes after the restart, Santi Comesaña broke the offside trap and coolly chipped Marc-André ter Stegen to make it 2-2.

Refusing to settle for a draw, Villarreal continued to press and looked dangerous throughout the second half. Barcelona dominated possession but remained vulnerable to long balls over the top. As the match evolved into a tactical battle, both sides searched for the breakthrough.

In the dying minutes, Barça midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Fermín worked hard to maintain control in a crowded central area, but the final pass was missing. Raphinha had a golden opportunity with 15 minutes remaining but dragged his shot wide of the post.

Despite Barcelona’s efforts, it was Villarreal who came away with the victory and, more importantly, a place in the Champions League — a fitting reward for their sharp counterattacking play and clinical finishing.
