South Korea’s Political Crisis Deepens as Ex-PM Han Declares Presidential Run

South Korea’s leadership turmoil escalated Friday as former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced his candidacy for the June 3 snap presidential election—just hours after stepping down as caretaker president.

Han’s resignation led to Education Minister Lee Ju-ho becoming South Korea’s third acting president in under six months, underscoring the political instability that has plagued the nation since President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment in December over a brief, controversial martial law declaration.

“I will strive to maintain stable government operations,” Lee said upon taking office.

Han, 75, described his decision to run as a duty to guide the nation through crisis. “I’m acting for the future of the Republic of Korea,” he told reporters, pledging constitutional reforms to curb presidential power.

His bid adds uncertainty to a volatile race already shaken by legal trouble for leading opposition candidate Lee Jae-myung. The Supreme Court recently overturned Lee’s acquittal on election law charges, potentially disqualifying him if convicted.

Though running as an independent, Han is expected to align with the conservative People Power Party. The Democratic Party criticized his candidacy, accusing him of prioritizing ambition over national stability.

With just weeks to go, South Korea faces a pivotal election defined by legal battles, political distrust, and calls for lasting reform.
