South Korea began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic on Thursday.
The Koreans controlled large stretches of the contest in Guadalajara but struggled to convert their dominance into goals until a late strike from substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu sealed the win.
Led by Son Heung-min, South Korea created several openings in the first half but failed to capitalise. Son came close on multiple occasions, firing one effort over the crossbar and sending another wide after a skilful run through the Czech defence.
Despite being under pressure, the Czech Republic took the lead early in the second half when Ladislav Krejci powered a header past goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.
South Korea eventually found a breakthrough in the 67th minute through Hwang In-beom, who calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Matek Kovar after disguising his initial shot.
The Czechs later had a goal ruled out before Hwang turned provider, delivering a cross from the right that Oh converted in the closing stages to secure all three points for the Asians.
