Governor says intelligence points to Old Oyo National Park as security forces intensify efforts to bring victims home safely….
More than three weeks after gunmen stormed schools in Oyo State and whisked away dozens of pupils and teachers, Governor Seyi Makinde has disclosed that intelligence reports suggest the victims are still being held within the vast Old Oyo National Park corridor.
The governor made the revelation in his latest newsletter released on Friday, providing a fresh update on the rescue operation that has gripped families, communities, and residents across the state since the abduction occurred nearly a month ago.
According to Makinde, the kidnapped pupils and their teachers remain the central focus of ongoing security operations, with authorities continuing to pursue every credible lead in a bid to secure their release.
The victims were taken during coordinated attacks on schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. Since then, anxious relatives have waited for news, hoping for a breakthrough in the search effort.
Acknowledging the growing concern among affected families, the governor said he understands the emotional toll the prolonged captivity has placed on parents and loved ones. While reassuring residents that government and security agencies remain committed to the rescue mission, he admitted that the passage of time has only deepened fears and uncertainty.
Makinde said available intelligence places the abductees somewhere within the broader Old Oyo National Park axis, a sprawling landscape covering about 2,500 square kilometres and stretching across parts of ten local government areas in the state.
He noted that the size of the park, combined with its rugged terrain and difficult accessibility, has complicated rescue operations and requires carefully coordinated security actions.
Despite the challenges, the governor insisted that security agencies have not eased their efforts, stressing that strategic operations are ongoing to ensure the victims are rescued safely.
He also appealed to residents to remain alert and cooperate with authorities by reporting suspicious movements or activities through the state’s toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615.
Makinde further warned against the spread of unverified claims and rumours surrounding the abduction, saying misinformation could undermine ongoing operations and hinder efforts to secure the victims’ release.
As the search enters its fourth week, the governor called on residents to continue supporting security agencies with useful information while keeping the abducted teachers and pupils in their thoughts as authorities push for a positive outcome.
