Wilfred Ndidi Named Super Eagles Captain Ahead of 2025 AFCON

Wilfred Ndidi has been confirmed as the captain of the Super Eagles for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong.

Troost-Ekong announced his decision to step down from international football on Thursday, ending a decade-long career with Nigeria.

Ndidi, who led the Super Eagles during the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Morocco last month, will now officially assume the captaincy role for the AFCON tournament.

Moses Simon, the experienced winger, is expected to serve as vice-captain alongside Ndidi.

Since making his debut for Nigeria in August 2015, Ndidi has earned 71 caps and has been a key figure in the midfield. The defensive midfielder missed the delayed 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire due to injury but is set to lead the team in Morocco.

This appointment highlights Ndidi’s leadership and experience as Nigeria prepares to take on Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C of the tournament.
