Wike Unveils Digital Monitoring System to Curb Streetlight Vandalism in Abuja

Abuja is set to adopt a new digital approach to protect its public lighting infrastructure as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, unveiled a technology-driven plan to tackle the persistent vandalism of streetlights across the city.

Speaking after inspecting key infrastructure projects in the capital on Thursday, Wike revealed that newly awarded streetlight contracts now incorporate digital surveillance and central monitoring capabilities. The upgraded approach, embedded in agreements with firms such as China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Geo-engineering Corporation (CGC), is designed to safeguard installations without relying solely on physical security patrols.

According to the minister, the system will operate through a central control hub capable of tracking faults and suspicious interference in real time. He explained that the move is intended to deter vandals and reduce the cost of repeatedly replacing stolen cables, poles and electrical components.

Wike noted that streetlight installation along Airport Road is nearing completion and will operate under the enhanced security framework. He expressed confidence that integrating technology into infrastructure projects would significantly reduce vandalism and improve response times when incidents occur.

Authorities have previously reported dozens of arrests linked to the theft of streetlight materials and manhole covers in areas including Wuse, Mabushi, Garki and Kabusa. Security agencies say coordinated operations have led to multiple suspects being apprehended in recent months.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, Wike said protecting public assets remains critical to improving safety, mobility and economic activity throughout the Federal Capital Territory.
