Wike Credits Tinubu for Abuja’s Rapid Infrastructure Transformation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering support for the steady progress of infrastructure development projects across Abuja, likening the president’s backing to the tree that enables a monkey to leap — a metaphor delivered in characteristic Pidgin English.

Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Right-Hand Service Carriageway in the capital city. Speaking before dignitaries and residents, the former Rivers State governor praised Tinubu’s leadership as the driving force behind the visible transformation of Nigeria’s capital.

He extended the metaphor, emphasizing the consequences of lacking institutional support:

Wike reaffirmed his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, promising to continue delivering impactful projects for the benefit of the FCT and the country.

The FCT Minister highlighted road infrastructure as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s economic development, stressing that the ongoing transformation across Abuja is both deliberate and necessary.

Since assuming office, Wike has overseen a number of fast-tracked construction and rehabilitation projects in the capital, many of which have been completed in record time. The newly commissioned service carriageway is among the flagship projects under his watch, aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing urban mobility.

While the FCT’s infrastructure upgrades have been widely commended, they have not come without controversy. One project that has drawn public scrutiny is the ₦39 billion renovation of the Abuja International Conference Centre, recently renamed in honor of President Tinubu.

Opposition voices and segments of the public have questioned the cost and timing of the project, citing competing national priorities and economic hardship. However, Wike has consistently defended the investment, arguing that visible progress and urban renewal are only possible through consistent presidential support.

President Tinubu, for his part, has backed Wike publicly, describing him as a “performing minister” and urging him to ignore distractions from what he termed “bystanders and busybodies.”

With the FCT now positioned as a showcase of the Renewed Hope administration, Wike continues to blend political loyalty with urban delivery, using metaphors, momentum, and a visible track record to frame his tenure.
