Wike Accuses Political Leaders of Misleading Rivers Governor Over Peace Accord

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused some political leaders of allegedly misleading Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, amid the ongoing political tension in the state.

Wike made the allegation while addressing supporters in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State. He insisted that agreements reached before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following efforts to resolve the protracted political crisis in the oil-producing state, must be honoured by all parties involved.

According to the former Rivers State governor, the agreement was formally signed by key stakeholders, including former governor Peter Odili, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, leaders of major political parties, and other senior officials. He alleged that Governor Fubara failed to abide by the terms of the accord despite endorsing it.

Wike further accused some political actors of publicly contradicting the agreement after initially supporting it, describing such conduct as irresponsible and capable of undermining peace and stability in the state.

He warned that political statements and actions have consequences, stressing that misleading narratives can damage trust and fuel instability over time.

The FCT minister emphasised Rivers State’s strategic political importance within the South-South region and urged leaders to exercise caution and honesty, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues that affect governance and public order.

Reflecting on past political events, Wike recalled attempts by some factions to dismantle the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in Rivers State during a previous convention. He said those efforts ultimately failed, adding that subsequent political developments had exposed the futility of such actions.

Reaffirming his commitment to equity, fairness, and justice, Wike stated that his political decisions have always been guided by principle rather than personal interest or party considerations.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Ogu/Bolo for their consistent support over the years, particularly during challenging political periods. Wike also commended President Tinubu for what he described as unprecedented federal appointments of Rivers State indigenes, saying the President had demonstrated sincerity by honouring agreements reached with stakeholders.

Speaking at the gathering, Chairman of the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress, George Sekibo, criticised Governor Fubara, describing him as ungrateful and declaring support for Wike. He said Ijaw leaders would mobilise politically against Fubara’s re-election bid.

Also addressing the gathering, the Executive Director of Finance at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Boma Iyaye, assured Wike of continued support from the Ogu/Bolo people and praised him for facilitating key appointments and development projects in the area.

Earlier, the Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, Vincent Nemieboka, highlighted several development initiatives attributed to Wike’s influence and reaffirmed the loyalty of the local council and its residents.

The meeting drew political leaders, traditional rulers, chiefs, and other stakeholders, and featured cultural and traditional performances to welcome the FCT Minister and his entourage.
