All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Biodun Coker has announced his ambition to contest for the position of Chairman of the Lagos Island Council, citing a deep desire to serve his community and continue a legacy of impact-driven leadership.
In a statement, Coker clarified that the Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi, is not opposed to any individual’s right to seek elective office, countering rumors that his aspiration lacked institutional support.
He described the misrepresentation of his comments on the upcoming council polls as deliberate attempts by political rivals threatened by the momentum of his growing support.
“My remarks were selectively quoted by those uncomfortable with the widespread endorsement my candidacy has been receiving. They have no vision or record of service to show, so they resort to whisper campaigns and faceless attacks,” he said.
Coker challenged his critics to step forward and show their tangible contributions to community development.
“Leadership is not declared in backrooms or headlines; it is proven in the streets, the markets, the schools, and in the lives of the people. Let them show us what they’ve built or transformed,” he declared.
Addressing criticism related to his family background, Coker defended the legitimacy of legacy-based public service.
“It is not a sin for the children of public officers to seek public office. There is no shame in legacy when it is rooted in service, values, and impact,” he stated.
He also cleared the air about his father, noting:
“My father, Yemisi Coker, has not held any political office since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1999. I am proud of his record in public service, and I am equally determined to build mine on the foundation of integrity and dedication.”
Coker concluded by reiterating his vision for the Lagos Island Council, anchored on grassroots development, accountability, and inclusive governance.
