Werder Bremen Sack Ole Werner After Contract Stand-Off

Werder Bremen have parted ways with head coach Ole Werner following his decision not to extend his contract beyond 2026.

Reports from German media on Monday indicated that Werner had declined an offer to renew his deal with the club. In response, Bremen acted swiftly, announcing the 37-year-old’s immediate dismissal on Tuesday.

In an official statement, the club expressed disappointment over Werner’s choice: “We deeply regret Ole’s decision because we envisioned a long-term collaboration with him. As we need clarity and continuity in the head coaching position, we have decided to release Ole.”

Werner took charge of Bremen in 2021, when the club was still in the second division. He guided the four-time Bundesliga champions and six-time DFB-Pokal winners back to the top flight at the first attempt and has steadily improved the team’s league position in each subsequent season.

In the just-concluded campaign, Bremen narrowly missed out on European qualification, finishing just one point behind the final European spot. The club has not competed in European football since the 2010–11 season.

With several Bundesliga clubs currently seeking new managers—including RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg, Cologne, and Augsburg—Werner could soon be in line for a new role.
