WAEC Denies Cancelling English Language Exam Over Alleged Night Sitting

Exam body dismisses viral reports, reassures candidates results remain valid

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted viral claims that it cancelled the 2025 English Language paper due to allegations of the exam being conducted at night in certain parts of Nigeria.

The council’s Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, clarified that the supposed cancellation notice, which circulated online, is entirely false and did not originate from WAEC.

The fake statement, dated May 30 and falsely attributed to the council, claimed that the exam was cancelled due to widespread misconduct, including the unauthorised use of notes, collusion, and recording of exam content—allegations WAEC has now strongly denied.

In a follow-up official statement issued by WAEC’s Public Affairs Officer, Moyosola Adesina, the council described the viral notice as the work of “mischief-makers” attempting to discredit the examination body and cause panic among students and parents.

“WAEC wishes to categorically state that the English Language paper has not been cancelled, and no new date has been scheduled for a re-conduct,” Adesina confirmed.

She emphasized that any genuine communication from WAEC is shared only via its official, verified social media platforms and through accredited media outlets.

The council also used the opportunity to appreciate stakeholders and the general public for their continued trust, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the credibility of its examinations and exploring innovative ways to better serve Nigerian students.
