Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the University of Ibadan in reclaiming its status as Nigeria’s foremost academic institution and regaining global excellence.
He made this pledge while receiving the university’s management team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The delegation, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale, decorated the Vice President as UI@75 Ambassador Plenipotentiary—the highest honour reserved for an alumnus of the institution as it marks its 75th anniversary.
Vice President Shettima described the University of Ibadan as the greatest citadel of learning in Nigeria and West Africa. Recalling his time as a postgraduate student, he noted that UI attracted scholars from across Africa and produced some of the continent’s most influential figures.
He restated the Federal Government’s resolve to revitalise Nigeria’s education sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that both public and private sector partnerships would be mobilised to elevate higher institutions—particularly UI.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor explained that the university’s 75th anniversary celebration recognises outstanding alumni who have made significant contributions to humanity. He noted that while many have been named UI@75 Ambassadors, the Vice President stands alone in receiving the distinct title of Ambassador Plenipotentiary.
The Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu Saliu, officially performed the decoration on behalf of the university’s Council, Senate, staff, and students, presenting a commemorative plaque to the honouree.
The university’s team included Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Professor Peter Olapegba; Director of Alumni Relations, Professor Olakunbi Olasope; and members of the Directorate of Public Communication.
