Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba has praised Nigeria’s national team for their commanding 4-1 win over Gabon in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifying playoffs, despite off-field issues in the build-up to the match.
The Super Eagles had staged a strike on Tuesday, just two days before the crucial fixture, demanding payment of their outstanding match bonuses. After resuming training on Wednesday, only 24 hours before kickoff, the team demonstrated resilience and composure to secure a dominant win against the Panthers.
Sevilla forward Akor Adams opened the scoring in the 78th minute, capitalising on a loose ball to slot into an unguarded net. Gabon responded 10 minutes later when Mario Lemina’s deflected strike found its way past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to level the game.
Chidera Ejuke, coming off the bench, restored Nigeria’s advantage in the first half of extra time with a clinical finish following Wilfred Ndidi’s precise pass. Victor Osimhen then scored twice to seal a 4-1 victory, ensuring Nigeria a place in the final.
“Despite the problems, the boys reacted positively and did the job,” Ikpeba said during an appearance on Super Sports. “What a fantastic display we saw in the extra-time. I’m sure this momentum these boys will take to the next game. A great, great result. Our boys will be so pleased with the extra time of this game. So congratulations to the boys.”
The Super Eagles now prepare to face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the playoff final, with a spot at the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026 at stake.
