Venezuelan Crisis: ECOWAS urges restraint and adherence to principles of international law

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has voiced significant concern regarding the escalating situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
In a statement released on Sunday, the regional organization called upon the international community to exercise restraint and adhere to the principles of international law.
ECOWAS emphasized its vigilant monitoring of events in Venezuela, underscoring the critical importance of respecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “While states are entitled to combat international crimes, these actions must remain within the framework of international law,” the statement declared.
The organization acknowledged the right of nations to tackle pressing issues such as terrorism and drug trafficking but cautioned that these efforts should not infringe upon the sovereignty of other states. “We must remind the international community of their obligation to uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each nation,” ECOWAS stated, referencing Article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter.
Aligning its stance with the African Union, ECOWAS expressed full support for a statement issued by the AU on January 3, 2026, which called for restraint and an inclusive dialogue among the Venezuelan populace.
In a show of solidarity, ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to the Venezuelan people during this pivotal moment in their national journey. “We reiterate our solidarity with the people of Venezuela and urge all states to uphold their independence and territorial integrity,” the statement added.
The organization expressed confidence in the Venezuelans’ ability to shape their own future, advocating for a participatory process that involves the voices of all citizens.
Through this statement, ECOWAS reasserts its dedication to peaceful dialogue, adherence to international norms, and the fundamental right of peoples to self-determination.
