Vector Questions Church as Physical Structure, Urges Focus on Personal Faith

Nigerian rapper Vector Tha Viper has sparked conversation online after sharing his views on organised worship, stating that he does not see church as a physical building but as something rooted in the individual.
In a recent interview, the rapper explained that he does not attend church services because he rejects the idea of church as an edifice. Instead, he believes spirituality is centred on personal conviction and one’s relationship with God.
“I don’t believe in church as an edifice or a building. I believe in church as a human being,” Vector said, adding that the Bible emphasises the condition of the heart over physical structures.
Clarifying his stance, the artiste noted that his comments were not meant to criticise churchgoers but to highlight what he considers a deeper spiritual truth.
Vector referenced a passage he attributed to Thomas, which suggests that the kingdom is neither confined to the sky nor the sea but exists both within and around individuals. According to him, the teaching underscores the importance of self-awareness in understanding one’s connection to God.
Quoting the passage, he said the kingdom is “both inside of you and outside of you,” stressing that knowing oneself is central to spiritual growth.
The rapper further argued that if the kingdom were limited to a physical church, then the altar would hold greater importance than the individual. He described the kingdom as a collective of believers, grounded in personal salvation.
“You are saved individually by connecting to God,” he said.
Vector’s remarks have added to ongoing debates about the role of organised religion and personal faith, particularly among public figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
