Virgil van Dijk has indicated that Liverpool is preparing for a significant summer in the transfer market, as reports suggest he is nearing an agreement on a new contract that will extend his stay at Anfield.
Liverpool, under manager Arne Slot, moved closer to securing their 20th English league title—tying Manchester United’s record—following a 2-1 victory over West Ham, in which Van Dijk scored the decisive goal. The Reds now sit 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with six matches remaining and could clinch the title as early as next weekend, depending on other results.
Van Dijk, who captained the side for the 100th time in the Premier League on Sunday, is expected to sign a two-year contract extension, aligning with Mohamed Salah’s recent renewal.
Following a quiet transfer window last summer—where Federico Chiesa was the sole outfield addition but has seen limited action—Slot is keen to reinforce the squad. Van Dijk expressed confidence in the club’s leadership to deliver a productive off-season.
“I believe Liverpool can remain competitive for titles in the coming years,” Van Dijk stated. “There are likely to be changes in the squad, and I think the club is planning for a big summer. We have to trust the board to make the right decisions.”
The 33-year-old Dutch international also highlighted the advantage of having a full pre-season, with no major international tournaments scheduled this summer.
“This time, we’ll have a proper training camp and time to implement the manager’s ideas,” he said. “That will definitely help improve our consistency.”
Van Dijk, poised to become only the second Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League trophy, reaffirmed his deep connection to the club.
