Amid escalating attacks in northern and central Nigeria, U.S. Congressman, Riley Moore, has said that serious discussions about dividing the country have not taken place. During his recent visit, he highlighted the threats posed by terrorist groups and stressed the need for international support to protect vulnerable communities.
Moore, representing West Virginia’s 2nd District, recently traveled to Nigeria to meet with government officials, church leaders, aid organisations, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) to assess the scale of violence targeting Christians.
“In all of my meetings, the idea of splitting the country has not come up in any serious way. Efforts to support separatist movements only increase the danger for Christians”, Moore said in a post on X on Saturday.
The Congressman warned that a destabilized Nigeria would embolden terrorist groups and worsen insecurity for Christians across the country. He also highlighted a new security cooperation agreement between the U.S. and Nigeria, describing it as a key step toward reducing violence and strengthening bilateral relations.
During his visit to Benue State, Moore interacted with survivors of attacks in IDP camps. He described witnessing harrowing accounts, including families who lost multiple members to Fulani and Islamic extremists.
“One woman lost five children in front of her while pregnant, yet survived to give birth in an IDP camp. Another lost her husband, two daughters, and her unborn child. The brutality is beyond words”, he said.
Moore, part of a fact-finding delegation sent by former President Donald Trump, stressed the importance of international awareness and support to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further atrocities.
