Unregistered Elevators to Be Decommissioned: Lagos State Sets March 2026 Deadline

Property owners and developers have been urged by the Lagos State Safety Commission to register and certify all elevators in their buildings before March 31, 2026, ahead of a statewide enforcement exercise targeting unsafe or uncertified lifts.

Director-General and CEO of the Commission, Lanre Mojola, said the initiative aims to prevent accidents amid Lagos’s rapid rise in high-rise developments. He warned that any elevator found unregistered or uncertified after the deadline will be decommissioned, and the premises could be sealed.

“Elevators and other vertical transportation equipment are vital components of modern urban infrastructure. Proper registration and regular maintenance are essential to safeguard residents and workers”, Mojola said.

To facilitate compliance, the Commission has launched a dedicated digital platform, where property owners can register elevators. New installations in both government and private buildings will undergo inspection before carrying passengers, while existing elevators will be subjected to periodic safety audits.

Mojola also encouraged residents and office workers to participate by reporting faulty elevators, poor maintenance, or unregistered lifts through the Commission’s safety hotlines.

“Public participation and strict enforcement will foster a culture of safety and accountability. Safety must always take priority over cost considerations”, he added.

The Commission stressed that the grace period for compliance is ending and reiterated that elevators not meeting registration and certification requirements after March 31, 2026, will be shut down during the enforcement operation.
