Trump Warns Canada’s Palestine Recognition Could Jeopardize Trade Deal

In a sharply worded post on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Canada’s plan to recognize the State of Palestine could derail efforts to finalize a new trade agreement with Washington, raising the stakes for both diplomacy and economics just days before a critical deadline.

“Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!”

The warning followed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement that Canada will formally recognize Palestinian statehood at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.

Ottawa’s move aligns with Britain and France, and Carney emphasized that recognition would be conditional on democratic reforms within the Palestinian Authority and the exclusion of Hamas from future governance.

Meanwhile, trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington are entering a decisive phase. Trump has threatened to impose 35% tariffs on Canadian exports not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) if a new deal is not reached by August 1.

While Carney insists discussions remain “constructive,” Canadian officials privately acknowledge that a full resolution before the deadline is increasingly unlikely.

Carney defended Canada’s decision as a moral obligation amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling recognition of Palestinian statehood “long deferred, but now necessary.” U.S. and Israeli officials, however, criticized the move, warning it risks legitimizing Hamas and undermining fragile ceasefire efforts.

The standoff highlights the increasingly intertwined nature of trade and foreign policy, as Canada positions itself as a defender of international law and humanitarian principles, while the United States signals that geopolitical choices come with economic costs.
