Troops from the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Brigade have successfully conducted a coordinated operation against the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The operation, which involved intense firefights, led to the neutralization of six terrorists.
A statement from the Joint Media Coordination Centre, signed by Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed that during the operation, the troops recovered several weapons and ammunition, including four AK-47 rifles, 160 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a box containing 12.7mm ammunition.
However, the operation came at a significant cost, with five soldiers tragically losing their lives while carrying out their duties.
The military has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to terrorism or security threats, particularly in the Gudu Local Government Area and surrounding regions. Public cooperation is being emphasized as a vital part of maintaining peace and safety in affected communities.
The Lakurawa sect, which has its origins in Sokoto State, is believed to have been initially formed in 2016 or 2017 as a self-defense militia. Over time, the group has evolved into a radical faction imposing strict religious laws and engaging in violent attacks. The sect is said to have links with extremist elements from neighboring Mali and Niger and has expanded its activities into Kebbi State, where it has caused widespread destruction.
The recent rise in violence by the Lakurawa group has contributed significantly to the insecurity in the northwestern region, with reports of killings, cattle rustling, and other criminal activities.
