The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says ex-militant leader and Niger Delta figure, Chief Government Ekpemupolo—widely known as Tompolo—will be questioned over a viral video allegedly showing him involved in naira abuse during his 54th birthday celebration.
In the clip, which surfaced in April, Tompolo is seen dancing as ₦1,000 notes are sprayed around him—an act prohibited under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act. The EFCC responded Monday via its social media platforms: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
The move follows rising public calls for accountability and comes amid a wider EFCC crackdown on currency abuse. The agency recently prosecuted celebrity crossdresser Bobrisky for similar offences, handing down a six-month sentence.
The viral footage has reignited debates on selective enforcement, with critics urging the EFCC to uphold justice irrespective of social or political status. Legal observers say a formal invitation for questioning now appears imminent.
While Tompolo has yet to respond publicly, the EFCC’s next steps are being closely watched — both as a test of its impartiality and its resolve in enforcing currency laws.
