President Bola Tinubu has formally transmitted a ₦1.48 trillion budget proposal for Rivers State to the National Assembly, seeking urgent approval to address the fiscal vacuum caused by the Supreme Court’s nullification of the state’s 2025 budget.
This move comes as Rivers remains under emergency rule, underscoring the urgency for financial intervention.
According to the budget breakdown, ₦324 billion is earmarked for critical infrastructure development, ₦166 billion allocated to healthcare, ₦75.6 billion dedicated to education, and ₦31.4 billion set aside for agricultural projects.
The President highlighted that the agricultural sector alone is projected to create approximately 6,000 new jobs, reflecting a strategic focus on employment generation and economic revitalization.
President Tinubu appealed to lawmakers to expedite the budget’s passage, emphasizing its importance for restoring stability and promoting growth in Rivers State.
This budget submission marks a significant step in Nigeria’s federal-state fiscal relations, especially considering the Supreme Court’s recent ruling and the prevailing emergency administration, positioning the National Assembly as a crucial actor in the state’s path to recovery and development.
