The Headies Matter More to Nigerian Artists Than the Grammys – Lojay

Grammy-nominated singer Lojay has voiced his belief that The Headies Awards hold greater significance for Nigerian artists than international accolades like the Grammys.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, Lojay emphasized the importance of valuing local recognition, arguing that international award platforms will never truly prioritize Nigerian talent.
“As much as the Grammys and other global awards are nice, the reality is this: as a Nigerian, you’ll never be the priority in a space that isn’t your own,” he said.
Lojay, who won Best Male Vocal Performance at the 17th Headies, cited the example of Tems. “She made one of the most beautiful R&B albums last year, yet the Grammys placed her in the Best African Music Performance category. Why wasn’t she considered for Best R&B, Best Pop, or even Best Female Artist? Because those categories are reserved for their own, and that’s fine. But it shows the need to build and value our own platforms.”
He called for a future where The Headies is so globally respected that international stars travel to Nigeria to receive the award. “Imagine Travis Scott coming to Nigeria for The Headies. That’s the kind of recognition we need. We gain nothing from the Grammys being bigger than The Headies. But everyone benefits when The Headies becomes a global force.”
Lojay’s comments have sparked renewed discussion around the importance of local industry validation and the push for homegrown platforms to gain international prominence.
