Tems Lists Her Top Dating Red Flags, Says Friendship and Curiosity Are Non-Negotiable

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has opened up about what she considers the foundation of a healthy romantic relationship, emphasising the importance of genuine friendship and curiosity between partners.
In a recent interview with Complex, the acclaimed singer said she cannot be with someone who is unfriendly or makes little effort to understand their partner. According to her, the absence of these qualities signals deeper issues that shouldn’t be ignored.
“My dating terms are that someone who is not trying to be your friend is a red flag,” she said. “Anybody who isn’t curious about you is also a red flag. Because what are we doing? Why are we here if you don’t want to know me?”
Tems added that anyone whose partner shows no desire to learn more about them should reconsider the relationship entirely.
“If he or she doesn’t want to know more about you, end the relationship,” she said.
Prioritising Self-Love
The singer, who described herself as a “lover girl,” revealed that she is taking a more cautious approach to relationships because of past experiences. She said self-love now shapes how she chooses partners and navigates romance.
Tems encouraged people to value friendships within their relationships and walk away from situations where mutual interest and effort are lacking. She noted that curiosity and emotional connection are key indicators of a partner who genuinely cares.
Her remarks add to ongoing conversations about intentional dating and emotional compatibility, especially among young adults navigating modern relationships.
