The convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, came under attack on Monday in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, sparking renewed political tensions in the state.
Malami, now a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was reportedly on a condolence visit when suspected political thugs struck. Eyewitnesses Newsmen that at least 10 vehicles were vandalized, while several of Malami’s supporters sustained injuries.
Reacting to the incident, Malami condemned the attack, stressing that his presence in Birnin Kebbi had nothing to do with politics.
“It’s a painful act, clearly rooted in politics. Armed thugs emerged from the APC state headquarters, wielding dangerous weapons and stones, and launched an unprovoked attack on our convoy,” Malami alleged.
“But let it be clear: in Kebbi politics, there is no retreat and no surrender.”
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State swiftly denied involvement, with its Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafy, describing the attack as unfortunate and uncharacteristic of the ruling party.
“Kebbi is a peaceful state. No ruling party that enjoys overwhelming support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want to disrupt that peace,” Assalafy said.
However, he accused security operatives attached to Malami’s convoy of firing shots during the confrontation, which he claimed aggravated the situation.
