Students Accused of Bullying at Igbinedion Education Centre Arrested, To Face Juvenile Court

Police authorities in Edo State have arrested students linked to the bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre, with those implicated set to face trial at the family court under juvenile justice laws.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, said investigations had been concluded and all individuals directly connected to the incident had been identified.

According to the police, those found culpable have been apprehended and will be prosecuted in accordance with laws governing child protection and juvenile justice.

The Command also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police has directed the immediate expansion of the Operation Safe Schools initiative across secondary schools in the state as part of broader efforts to strengthen student safety and prevent future incidents.

The initiative, police said, is designed to identify lapses in school supervision, apply lessons from the incident, and improve security monitoring within educational institutions.

In addition, the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices has been activated to engage students, teachers, and school administrators through advocacy, sensitisation, and behavioural reorientation programmes.

Police appealed for calm, assuring the public that steps were being taken not only to ensure justice but also to establish preventive safeguards against a recurrence.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents, particularly children, and maintaining order across the state.

The development follows widespread public outrage over viral videos circulated online last week showing two male students physically assaulting a fellow student who lay helpless on the ground.

In one of the clips, a student was seen grabbing the victim by his uniform and repeatedly stomping on his chest while the victim cried out in pain—images that triggered condemnation nationwide.

Following the backlash, Igbinedion Education Centre announced the expulsion of the students involved, while the Edo State Government earlier demanded their arrest and prosecution, warning that bullying and violence in schools would not be tolerated.
