The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has strongly rejected the recent allocation formula approved for the disbursement of ₦50 billion released by the Federal Government for university-based unions.
The fund, meant to be shared among SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), has sparked outrage after 80% of the allocation was reportedly assigned exclusively to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), leaving just 20% to be shared among the three non-academic unions.
In a statement, SSANU and NASU described the distribution as “grossly unfair, provocative, and totally unacceptable.” They warned that the decision could fuel industrial unrest and deepen the divide between academic and non-academic staff in Nigerian universities.
“This lopsided arrangement is capable of creating industrial disharmony and further accentuating the teaching/non-teaching dichotomy in Nigerian universities,” the statement read.
The unions emphasized that non-teaching staff are not second-class citizens within the university system. They play critical roles in administrative operations, research support, technical services, and the overall development and functionality of institutions.
“The latest attempt to diminish our role and worth through this inequitable distribution is an injustice that we will not accept in silence,” the statement added.
SSANU and NASU have called on the Federal Government to urgently review and reverse the allocation formula.
They cautioned that proceeding with the current plan could trigger avoidable resentment and widespread industrial action at a time when stability in the university system is essential.
