Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, recently acquitted of multiple rape and human trafficking charges, was rearrested on Saturday in East London, South Africa, for alleged immigration violations.
The arrest occurred shortly after a church service, according to South African Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola. Omotoso is scheduled to appear in court on Monday to face charges related to breaches of the Immigration Act.
The 66-year-old founder of the Jesus Dominion International (JDI) church, was initially arrested in 2017 and faced 63 charges, including rape, sexual assault, human trafficking, and racketeering.
After a protracted legal battle spanning nearly eight years, the Eastern Cape High Court acquitted him and his co-accused on April 2, 2025, citing prosecutorial mishandling and insufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The acquittal sparked widespread public outrage in South Africa, a country grappling with high rates of gender-based violence. Critics argued that the case highlighted systemic issues within the judicial process, particularly in handling sexual violence cases.
Following his acquittal, concerns were raised about Omotoso’s immigration status. Authorities indicated that he and his family are considered prohibited immigrants and may face deportation. The recent arrest underscores ongoing legal challenges surrounding his residency in South Africa.
The case continues to draw significant attention, reflecting broader societal concerns about justice and accountability in cases of sexual misconduct.
