Shettima Calls for Tolerance, Peaceful Coexistence During Visit to Gbong Gwom Jos

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians to embrace tolerance, unity, and peaceful coexistence, describing national cohesion as the foundation for sustainable development.

The Vice President made the call on Wednesday in Jos, Plateau State, during a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Royal Majesty, Jacob Gyang Buba.

Shettima said Nigeria’s ethnic and religious diversity should be harnessed as a source of strength rather than division, stressing that the bonds uniting Nigerians far outweigh factors that seek to divide them.

“We are all connected one way or the other. What binds us together as a people supersedes whatever threatens to separate us. There can be no development without peace,” the Vice President said.

The visit formed part of Shettima’s engagement in the state ahead of the grand reception of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and other political leaders into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Commending traditional rulers for their stabilising role in society, Shettima described them as vital partners in promoting peace and social harmony.

“They are not only custodians of our cultural heritage; they also play a critical role in upholding society by constantly preaching peace among their people,” he noted.

The Vice President also welcomed the growing political cooperation between APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and Governor Mutfwang, describing the alignment as a positive step for Plateau State.

“The National Chairman, an indigene of Plateau State, has pledged his full support to the Governor. With their coming together, the state stands to benefit more from the dividends of democracy. This is good for the people,” Shettima said.

He expressed confidence that the political realignment would further strengthen peace and stability in the state and beyond.

“There can be no development without peace. With this collaboration, Plateau State will enjoy greater peace and tranquility,” he added.

In his remarks, Governor Mutfwang praised the cordial and productive relationship between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, noting that it continues to translate into positive outcomes for Nigerians.

“The relationship between Mr. President and the Vice President remains strong and focused on delivering good governance to the Nigerian people,” the governor said.

Responding, the Gbong Gwom Jos called for enhanced security measures and sincere reconciliation efforts to address the security challenges facing Plateau State and other parts of the country.

“While we appreciate the efforts of the security agencies, we appeal for increased security and genuine reconciliation across the nation,” the monarch said.

He urged Nigerians to respect one another and reject violence, stressing that no religion supports insurgency or lawlessness.

“Islam and Christianity do not promote violence or disorder. We all believe in God Almighty, and there is no justification for killing one another,” he added.

The royal father thanked the Vice President, the APC National Chairman, and the Plateau State Governor for the political realignment, describing it as a welcome development for both Plateau State and the nation at large.

Vice President Shettima later expressed appreciation to the government and people of Plateau State for the warm reception accorded him and his entourage during the visit.
