The Nigerian Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in attendance, marking her return to legislative duties following a court ruling that nullified her suspension.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, had been suspended for six months but cited a recent court judgment declaring the punishment excessive and unlawful.
In anticipation of her return, the National Assembly complex in Abuja witnessed heightened security. Visitors and staff were subjected to strict screening at the gates, with a visible presence of security personnel stationed at key entry points.
Her presence follows a viral video over the weekend in which she vowed to resume plenary on Tuesday, asserting that the court had affirmed her right to return to the chamber.
The senator’s suspension had sparked public debate, with many questioning the legality and proportionality of the Senate’s disciplinary action.
As of press time, the Senate has yet to issue an official response to her return, and it remains unclear whether the leadership will challenge or accept the court’s decision.
