Senate to Hold Two-Day National Security Summit Amid Rising Insecurity

In response to escalating security challenges across Nigeria, the Senate has resolved to convene a two-day National Security Summit aimed at proffering solutions to the country’s multifaceted insecurity issues. The decision was announced during a plenary session on May 6, 2025, following a motion sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC-Ondo).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the urgency of addressing the nation’s security concerns, noting that the summit would bring together key stakeholders, including security agencies, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations.

The summit aims to assess the current security architecture, identify gaps, and develop actionable strategies to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality plaguing various regions.

Senators expressed concern over the increasing rate of violent attacks, particularly in the North-East, North-West, and South-East regions, which have resulted in significant loss of lives and property.

The Senate’s decision aligns with previous efforts by the 8th and 9th National Assemblies to address security challenges through similar summits and legislative interventions.

Stakeholders are expected to present position papers and recommendations during the summit, which will inform subsequent legislative actions and policy formulations.

The Senate also plans to engage with the executive arm of government to ensure the implementation of resolutions arising from the summit.

Civil society organizations have lauded the initiative, urging the Senate to ensure that the summit leads to tangible outcomes rather than mere rhetoric.

Security experts advocate for a holistic approach that includes community policing, intelligence gathering, and addressing the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty and unemployment.

The summit is scheduled to take place in Abuja, with dates to be announced in due course. It is anticipated that the deliberations will contribute significantly to restoring peace and stability across the nation.
