In a major shake-up aimed at addressing emerging national security challenges, the Senate has restructured several of its standing committees, including the Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
The move fulfills an earlier pledge by the upper chamber to strengthen oversight in critical areas.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during plenary by the Senate Selection Committee, chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Under the new arrangement:
Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi State) has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. He previously served as Chairman of the Committee on National Planning.
The Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry has been reshuffled, with Senator Shehu Buba (Bauchi State) taking over as Chairman. Senator Buba had recently been removed as Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
Senator Mustafa Musa (Yobe State) has been appointed Chairman of the Committee on National Planning.
In the Senate Committee on Air Force, Senate Minority Whip Osita Ngwu (Enugu State) has assumed the role of Acting Chairman, having previously served as the committee’s deputy chairman. He replaces Senator Akwashiki, who became indisposed.
Senate leadership explained that the reconstitution is part of ongoing efforts to enhance legislative oversight and ensure a more effective response to Nigeria’s evolving national security landscape.
