Senate Finance Committee Chair Pledges Practical Tax Reforms Following Public Hearing

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa, has assured Nigerians that the ongoing public hearing on the four proposed tax reform bills is part of an inclusive process aimed at producing practical, constitutionally sound legislation.

In an interview prior to the hearing, Senator Musa emphasized that the committee has welcomed diverse perspectives, giving all participants the opportunity to voice their opinions, including those with differing viewpoints.

He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to thoroughly reviewing all submissions before finalizing the legislation.

“We are committed to delivering a tax law that works for the country. Every presentation is being carefully considered, and after today’s session, we will embark on a three-day retreat.

During this time, we will consult with experts and the Office of the Attorney General to ensure that the final legislation aligns with constitutional requirements and serves the best interests of Nigerians,” Musa explained.

The Senator also highlighted the broader economic goals outlined by President Bola Tinubu, particularly the vision of growing Nigeria’s economy to one trillion naira. He emphasized that the proposed tax reforms will be a key driver in achieving this ambitious target.

Musa further underscored that the legislation should have long-term impact, stressing, “This law must endure beyond our tenure as lawmakers. We will be held accountable by the laws we enact. Our priority is to ensure that Nigerians view this tax system as fair, effective, and reflective of their needs.”

As the committee progresses, the focus remains on creating a tax framework that is both equitable and capable of supporting Nigeria’s economic growth, ultimately laying the foundation for a more sustainable and prosperous future for the nation.
