Senate Constitutes 18-Member Committee to Monitor Rivers State Sole Administrator

In a significant move to reinforce legislative oversight and uphold transparency, the Nigerian Senate has constituted an 18-member committee to supervise the activities of the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.).

The committee, chaired by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, was announced during Tuesday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The Senate President emphasized the importance of the committee’s work, describing it as a vital instrument in promoting good governance and accountability amid the unique political circumstances in the state.

“This committee must swing into action immediately,” Akpabio declared, stressing the urgency of ensuring that democratic principles are preserved in Rivers State, where a sole administrator was appointed following escalating political tensions.

The committee includes high-profile senators from various geopolitical zones and political parties, such as Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe, Simon Lalong, Sani Musa, and Osita Izunaso. Other members are Senators Adamu Aliero, Osita Ngwu, Kaka Shehu, Aminu Abass, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adebire, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Onyekachi, Idiat Adebule, Ide Dafinone, and Mohammed (APC, Jigawa), with the Clerk of the Senate serving as secretary.

Akpabio also hinted that the committee’s membership may be revised following further consultations, suggesting the Senate’s flexible approach to strengthening democratic structures in politically sensitive regions.

The decision to deploy a dedicated oversight team reflects growing national attention on Rivers State’s political landscape and reaffirms the Senate’s resolve to maintain institutional checks and balances in all levels of governance.
