Senate Approves Emergency Rule in Rivers State

The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request for a state of emergency in Rivers State. Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter during Thursday’s plenary before lawmakers entered a closed session.

Following the session, Akpabio put the matter to a voice vote, with lawmakers overwhelmingly supporting the request.

Announcing the decision, Akpabio stated that the Senate had exercised its powers under Section 305(2) of the Constitution to approve the president’s proclamation.

Akpabio expressed hope that the president’s declaration would restore peace and resolve the ongoing impasse in Rivers State.

The Senate also called on President Tinubu to establish an ad hoc committee of “eminent” Nigerians to mediate between the conflicting factions causing the crisis in the state.
