Senate Adjourns Plenary for Annual Recess, to Resume September 23
Akpabio urges continued committee work, oversight during break

The Nigerian Senate has adjourned plenary sessions for its annual recess and is expected to reconvene on September 23, 2025.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement on Wednesday during the chamber’s final session before the break, noting that the decision aligns with the legislative calendar and mirrors the schedule of the House of Representatives.
“We have started a new calendar that will take us to June next year,” Akpabio said. “So, it has fallen within this period for us to go on a break to enable us undertake major oversights.”
He emphasized that while plenary proceedings are suspended, senators are expected to continue committee assignments, including oversight functions across the country.
“All necessary committees, diaspora, reparation, interior and others, should use this time to carry out visits, especially to correctional facilities,” Akpabio added. “Submit your reports as soon as we return.”
He also announced the death of Professor Janet Plang, wife of Senator Diket Plang, and urged members to regroup in Abuja on Friday for a trip to Plateau State to attend the funeral. A plane, he said, would be available at 8 a.m. to convey senators.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele commended lawmakers for their commitment to legislative duties and expressed gratitude for a smooth session leading up to the recess.
