Saudi Officials in Tough Talks to Keep Ronaldo as Exit Hints Stir Transfer Speculation

Saudi Arabian officials are engaged in “difficult” negotiations to retain Cristiano Ronaldo in the country, following strong indications from the star footballer that he may be leaving Al Nassr, a source familiar with the talks told AFP on Thursday.
“There is an ongoing difficult negotiation to convince Ronaldo to stay and play” in the Saudi Pro League next season, said the source, who is affiliated with the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a major backer of Saudi football.
The source also revealed that one of the main proposals on the table includes a potential transfer to Al Hilal, which could provide Ronaldo the opportunity to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup. Another option reportedly being considered is a move to Asia’s current champion, Al Ahli.
Speculation intensified after Ronaldo posted the message “This chapter is over” late Monday night, just hours after the Saudi Pro League season concluded. Al Nassr finished third and once again failed to secure any silverware.
A special transfer window from June 1 to 10 has been created for the 32 teams set to compete in the upcoming Club World Cup, allowing them to sign new players in preparation for the expanded tournament, which begins June 14 in the United States.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently confirmed that discussions are underway regarding the possibility of Ronaldo participating in the global tournament.
The 40-year-old Portuguese forward joined Al Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United. His current contract is set to expire at the end of June.
“Ronaldo’s presence has been pivotal in the development of the Saudi league over the past two and a half years,” the source noted. “He has helped open the door for both elite and younger talent to consider Saudi Arabia as a viable destination.”
