Sanwo-Olu Inaugurates New LASU Governing Council, Tasks Members on Excellence

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday formally inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Council of the Lagos State University (LASU), unveiling a fresh leadership team expected to steer the institution’s next phase of development.

The ceremony, held at Lagos House in Ikeja, drew top government officials and senior members of the LASU management team, underscoring the administration’s renewed commitment to strengthening governance across state-owned tertiary institutions.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Sanwo-Olu described LASU as a pivotal institution in the state’s education ecosystem, noting that its output directly shapes the future of young people and enhances Lagos’ academic standing.

“I expressed my confidence in the council’s capacity to lead the university with integrity, focus and a commitment to excellence,” the governor wrote, stressing that effective leadership remains critical to sustaining LASU’s progress.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN; Secretary to the State Government, ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Olabode Agoro; and the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule.

LASU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, also attended the event alongside principal officers of the university.

Sanwo-Olu personally congratulated Babatunde Ogala, SAN, on his appointment as Chairman of the Governing Council. Other members, including Remi Desalu, took their oath of office before the governor.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the council’s mandate includes driving institutional reforms, strengthening research capacity, and ensuring that LASU continues to compete favourably with top universities within and outside Nigeria.

“I look forward to the progress ahead and to the continued growth of LASU as a leading institution in Nigeria and beyond,” the governor added.

The newly sworn-in council is expected to oversee strategic initiatives aimed at improving academic standards, expanding research opportunities, and enhancing overall student experience at the state-owned university.
