Sanwo-Olu Backs Lagos Athletes for 2025 International Skate-a-Thon

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is sponsoring the Skate Lagos team to participate in the 2025 International Skate-a-Thon in Calabar, where they will proudly represent the state.
This move highlights the governor’s ongoing commitment to sports development across Lagos, particularly in lesser-known disciplines. Despite skateboarding not being one of the 44 officially recognised sports associations in the state, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s support underscores his inclusive vision for athletic growth.
Skate Team Lagos is scheduled to depart for Calabar on Tuesday, flying with Air Peace, in preparation for their first set of games on Wednesday.
Hon. Adebanji Atewogboye, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, recommended the sponsorship, commending the governor’s forward-thinking approach to nurturing emerging talents at the grassroots level.
This support comes at a pivotal time for the sport, as skateboarding was recently added to the Olympic Games, boosting its global profile and increasing opportunities for athletes worldwide. In Lagos, this recognition has sparked growing interest and participation in skateboarding.
The Lagos State Sports Commission has lauded the Sanwo-Olu administration’s efforts to empower youth through diverse sporting activities. Hon. Atewogboye continues to lead various initiatives aimed at engaging young people and promoting sports development across the state.
By backing Team Lagos at the International Skate-a-Thon, the state reinforces its dedication to broadening its sports agenda and creating new avenues for athletes in emerging disciplines.
