Remo Stars Ladies Make Historic NWFL Super Six Debut After Dramatic Draw with Abia Angels

Remo Stars Ladies have etched their name into the history books by qualifying for the NWFL Premiership Super Six for the first time ever, following a dramatic 2–2 draw against Abia Angels in a rescheduled fixture played Thursday in Umuahia.
The draw was enough to secure the Ikenne-based club a place in the championship playoffs with one match still to play, a remarkable feat considering it is only their second season in Nigeria’s top-flight women’s league.
Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the match had to be stopped in the 23rd minute due to heavy rainfall and was completed the following day. Aware that just a single point would guarantee their qualification, the Sky Blue Stars handled the pressure with composure and grit.
Bolaji Olamide opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a stunning long-range strike that beat goalkeeper Christiana Obia. However, their lead was short-lived as Mary Lucky equalised for Abia Angels just five minutes later, ensuring both sides went into the break level.
The second half was fiercely contested with both teams creating opportunities. In stoppage time, Olamide netted her second of the game—her 12th goal of the season—to give Remo Stars a 2–1 lead. But the hosts refused to back down, and in the 93rd minute, Mariam Abdulrasheed powered home a header from a corner to level the match again.
The last-minute equaliser dashed Abia Angels’ hopes of making the Super Six, while jubilant celebrations erupted in the Remo Stars camp as their historic qualification was confirmed.
In other NWFL matches, Nasarawa Amazons also clinched a Super Six spot with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Edo Queens in Lafia, courtesy of an 89th-minute goal by Jenat Akekeromowei, ending the defending champions’ unbeaten run.
In the South-South derby held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa Queens edged Rivers Angels 1–0 with an early strike from Alaba Olabiyi. Bayelsa Queens remain unbeaten and lead Group B with 33 points.
Naija Ratels kept their playoff chances alive with a vital 2–0 away win over Delta Queens in Asaba. Goals came from Sofiat Bankole and Rita Tsebee. Ibom Angels shocked Robo Queens 1–0 in Uyo with a winner from Uwah Abasiofon, while Confluence Queens beat Ekiti Queens 1–0 in Anyigba thanks to a second-half goal from Hannah Yusuf.
Dannaz Ladies secured a crucial 1–0 victory over Heartland Queens in Lagos, with Ulumma Korie scoring late. Meanwhile, Benue Queens staged two comebacks to draw 2–2 with Adamawa Queens in one of the round’s most entertaining encounters.
With just one round of matches remaining, five teams have secured their place in the Super Six: Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels, Edo Queens, Remo Stars Ladies, and Nasarawa Amazons. The final playoff spot will be contested between Naija Ratels and FC Robo Queens on the last day of the regular season.
At the other end of the standings, Confluence Queens, Benue Queens, and Heartland Queens remain in the relegation zone.
