Rangers FC has expressed its “embarrassment” after being charged by UEFA for a “racist and/or discriminatory banner” displayed by fans during their recent Europa League clash against Fenerbahce. The incident occurred last week as Rangers secured a spot in the quarter-finals with a penalty shootout victory over the Turkish team.
The controversial banners, which read “Keep woke foreign ideologies out – defend Europe,” were held up by supporters during the match. In addition to this, Rangers was also hit with charges for throwing objects and blocking passageways.
The club issued a statement condemning the display, calling it “shameful” and emphasizing that the majority of their supporters would share their disapproval of those responsible for the actions. The statement further emphasized the club’s commitment to identifying the individuals involved and ensuring they face appropriate consequences.
“For the club to be charged with such a matter in 2025 is shameful, and the disdain for those responsible will be shared by the overwhelming majority of our supporters,” Rangers said. “This charge will bring consequences for the club, while the club is also working to identify those responsible and will ensure they also face consequences.”
Rangers made it clear that anyone who does not believe in inclusivity should reconsider their association with the club, reinforcing that everyone is welcome to follow the team, whether at Ibrox or at away games. “For the avoidance of doubt, if you do not believe in 2025 that absolutely everyone is welcome to follow Rangers, whether at Ibrox or away, then Rangers is not the club for you, and you should disassociate yourself with the club immediately.”
In addition to the banner incident, Rangers also condemned “two individuals” who used pyrotechnics following their league victory over Celtic. This behavior could affect the club’s future ticket allocations for European competitions.
Rangers, who were Europa League finalists in 2022, are set to face Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals next month.
