Putin Rejects U.S. Peace Proposal on Ukraine Amid NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed a US-brokered peace proposal, as talks in Moscow fail to yield any breakthrough in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Putin held a marathon meeting at the Kremlin with Jared Kushner, former US presidential adviser and son-in-law of Donald Trump, and US special envoy Steve Witkoff. The discussions followed weeks of US-led negotiations aimed at halting the conflict.

After five hours of talks, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that “no compromise” had been reached on the key issue of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, leaving both sides “neither further nor closer to resolving the crisis.” He added, “So far we haven’t found a compromise, but some American solutions can be discussed.”

Kushner and Witkoff reportedly presented Putin with a revised US peace plan, following an earlier version that alarmed Kyiv and several European capitals for appearing to offer substantial concessions to Moscow.

Putin continues to insist that Ukraine cede territory claimed by Russia, including full control over the Donbas regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. The Kremlin has also rejected any European peacekeeping presence on Ukrainian soil.

“There were some points we could agree on,” Ushakov noted, while emphasizing that “the president did not hide our critical, even negative, stance on a number of proposals.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated he may soon meet with US representatives to receive a detailed briefing on the talks.
