Psychiatrist seeks concerted efforts toward passage of Suicide Prevention Bill

The Coordinator, Suicide Prevention Advocacy Working Group, Taiwo Sheikh, has called for concerted efforts of all stakeholders to ensure passage of the Suicide Prevention Bill before the National Assembly.

In an interview with journalists in Lagos, Sheikh emphasized that the bill, which has already passed its first reading, is now awaiting a second reading. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts from government bodies, families, policymakers, and organizations to address the root causes of suicide and implement effective prevention strategies.

“Sheikh noted, ‘Suicide is a behaviour driven by a desire to escape overwhelming psychological pain,’ and highlighted that effective prevention and intervention require a multilayered approach.”

He pointed to the rising suicide rates and their devastating impact as a clear signal that Nigeria must take urgent action. A crucial step, he said, is the decriminalisation of suicide, which would open the door for more compassionate and effective prevention and treatment strategies.

“There is an urgent need for increased advocacy, greater support systems, and the removal of legal barriers that hinder access to mental health services,” Sheikh said.

He identified social and economic factors as major contributors to mental health challenges and suicide in Nigeria, emphasizing that addressing these determinants is key to meaningful progress.

Sheikh also highlighted the widespread stigma and cultural misconceptions surrounding mental health, which further isolate those in need and discourage them from seeking help. He pointed out that insufficient public funding for mental health and suicide prevention remains a major obstacle to delivering the necessary support.

To make lasting progress, Sheikh called for a whole-of-society approach, involving not only the government but also civil society organisations, community leaders, and other key stakeholders. Only through collective action, he said, can Nigeria effectively combat suicide and protect the mental well-being of its citizens.
