President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Journalism Icon Doyin Abiola

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Doyin Abiola, a trailblazer in Nigerian journalism, describing her as a woman of immense influence, integrity, and purpose.

Abiola, former Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the National Concord, reportedly died on Tuesday night. She was also the widow of the late Chief MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election.

In a heartfelt condolence message personally signed by the President, Tinubu hailed her as a pioneer and visionary whose career redefined journalism and inspired generations of women.

“She broke the gender barrier, becoming the first woman to edit a national newspaper and the first managing director of a daily newspaper,” Tinubu said.

“Her immense contributions to journalism and gender equity laid a foundation for generations of women. Her impact on our democracy was even more profound.”

President Tinubu described Dr. Abiola as a symbol of tenacity, excellence, and service to the public good, noting that her professional legacy would continue to shape Nigerian journalism and democratic values.

“She embodied integrity, tenacity, hard work, commitment to excellence, and dedication to public good and democratic governance,” the President added.

While offering his condolences to the Abiola and Aboaba families, especially her daughter Doyinsola, Tinubu also extended sympathy to the governments and people of Lagos and Ogun States, her places of origin and influence.

“Nigerians will never forget Doyin Abiola’s leadership during her illustrious journalism career, her championing of women’s empowerment, and her commitment to democracy,” Tinubu stated.

“May her soul rest in peace. May this nation be blessed with more women of Doyin Abiola’s calibre and pedigree.”

Abiola made history in 1980 when she became the pioneer editor of the National Concord, owned by her late husband. She later rose to the position of Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, overseeing all Concord titles and launching the popular Weekend Concord, which revolutionized people-centered reporting.

Her journalism career spanned three decades, during which she held various influential roles across the Nigerian media landscape. She was also a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), in recognition of her contributions to media development and democracy.
