Premier League Secures Fifth Champions League Spot After Arsenal’s Win Over Real Madrid
While the top four clubs in the Premier League always qualify automatically, England has now secured an extra “European Performance Spot” thanks to the collective success of its teams in UEFA’s club competitions this season.

Arsenal’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Real Madrid has officially guaranteed that at least five Premier League teams will compete in next season’s UEFA Champions League, the English top flight confirmed on Wednesday.
While the top four clubs in the Premier League always qualify automatically, England has now secured an extra “European Performance Spot” thanks to the collective success of its teams in UEFA’s club competitions this season.
This bonus spot is awarded to the top two nations in UEFA’s association coefficient rankings, and with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Chelsea all still alive in the latter stages of European tournaments, England has locked in a top-two finish. Spain and Italy follow in the coefficient table.
Five English sides are currently in the quarter-finals across Europe’s three competitions: Arsenal and Villa in the Champions League, United and Spurs in the Europa League, and Chelsea in the Conference League.
In theory, the Premier League could field as many as seven teams in the 2025 Champions League — the top five finishers in the league, plus the Champions League and Europa League winners, if either lifts the trophy while finishing outside the top five.
Liverpool appear on course to win the league title, with Arsenal in second and in strong form both domestically and in Europe. The battle for the remaining Champions League places is intense, with just six points separating third-placed Nottingham Forest and seventh-placed Aston Villa.
Arsenal’s commanding win over 15-time European champions Real Madrid on Tuesday has added momentum to their campaign, while Villa were set to take on Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night in their own quarter-final clash.
