“Pregnancy Affected My Vocal Range – Tiwa Savage Opens Up”

Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the challenges she faced balancing music and motherhood, revealing that her vocal range was affected during pregnancy.
In a recent chat on Afrobeats Intelligence, the Afrobeat queen reflected on the emotional and physical toll pregnancy took while she recorded her critically acclaimed 2015 album, R.E.D.
“I was pregnant when I recorded R.E.D,” Tiwa revealed. “I remember being in the studio with my big belly, crying. It was really tough to get through some of those sessions.”
She explained that her pregnancy altered her voice, making it difficult to hit certain notes, which led her to adjust the keys of some tracks on the album.
“Being pregnant affected my ability to reach certain vocal ranges, so I had to change the key of some songs to fit where I was vocally.”
Tiwa also shared a lighter moment from her time at Mavin Records, noting that she was the first female artist on the label to have a baby.
“I was the first to get pregnant in Mavin. So whenever the team noticed my energy dropping, Don Jazzy would tell them to bring me my cravings — eggs and bread,” she said with a smile.
Tiwa Savage signed with Mavin Records in 2012 and remained with the label until 2019 when she joined Universal Music Group, further cementing her place as one of Africa’s most influential music stars.
