The Delta State Police Command has arrested two men after a viral video showed them smoking a substance suspected to be marijuana while sitting on a police patrol van, drawing public outrage and prompting swift enforcement action.
The suspects, 34-year-old Patrick Junior Asini and 20-year-old Tega Ojo, were captured in the video sitting atop a patrol van marked “Nigeria Police Force Anti-crime Patrol, Oghara Division.” One of them was seen puffing smoke and flashing obscene gestures at an officer, while another voice in the background mocked the police and requested more marijuana.
The footage, which first surfaced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), was widely shared by users, including @dammiedammie35. It quickly caught the attention of the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.
Confirming the arrest on Thursday, Edafe revealed that the two suspects were traced and apprehended. He shared details of the items recovered from them, which included:
An army khaki uniform
Green beret
Face mask
Axe and cutlass
Six smartphones
Four laptops
Weed, weed grinders, and Rizla rolling papers
“These exhibits were recovered from the suspects,” Edafe said in a post on X, emphasizing that the investigation would continue.
He used the occasion to caution against disrespect for law enforcement and reaffirmed the force’s stance on law and order. “Police is your friend. It just depends on how you interpret it,” he added.
The incident, which appeared to be filmed at a car wash, has reignited discussions on youth conduct, drug use, and respect for security institutions in Nigeria.
Legal proceedings are expected to follow as authorities determine the full extent of the suspects’ actions and possible links to impersonation or other offenses.
